Remembering Patricia “Pat” Ambrose

Founder of the Veterans Drop-In Center

1943–2021

Patricia “Pat” Ambrose dedicated her life to helping others and creating a stronger community for people in need.

Her journey of service began in 1996 when she started volunteering at the Red Cross homeless shelter. Pat quickly became a lead volunteer and later served as the shelter’s volunteer coordinator. She remained committed to the Red Cross for 15 years, assisting with emergency services, public relations, and financial development.

After the Red Cross homeless shelter closed, Pat continued her work by becoming executive director of the Rockford Advocacy Coalition of the Homeless at the age of 66.

Creating a Place for Veterans

In 2009, Pat’s work helped lead to the creation of the Veterans Drop-In Center alongside her husband, Richard Ambrose, a United States Air Force veteran.

Pat became the heart of the center. She was compassionate, determined, and deeply committed to making sure local veterans had a place where they felt safe, welcome, and supported.

She was also known for running a tight ship, which earned her the affectionate nickname “The General.”

Throughout her years of service, Pat received numerous awards recognizing her dedication to the community. More importantly, she helped create a lasting network of support for veterans and others facing difficult circumstances.

Pat remained devoted to serving others until her passing in 2021.

Her Mission Lives On

The Veterans Drop-In Center reopened on November 3, 2025, with Pat’s mission, vision, and dedication guiding its work.

Today, the center’s staff and volunteers continue the work she began by providing members of the veteran community with a warm and safe place to gather, enjoy a cup of coffee or a hot meal, and share conversation and companionship with fellow veterans.

Pat’s leadership helped build more than a center. She created a community based on service, dignity, and fellowship.

Her legacy lives on in every veteran welcomed through our doors.
